Transforming Tradition…
We’ve always been passionate about preserving the unique charm and character of Queenslander homes while bringing them into the modern era. When we were approached by a family in Gordon Park, to renovate the kitchen and bathroom of their traditional Queenslander, we knew we had a special project on our hands! The home, which has been in their family for generations, meant it wasn’t just a house, but a cherished symbol of their history and memories. Our mission? To honour that legacy while creating beautiful, functional spaces that suit the needs of their busy, contemporary lifestyle.
Preserving the Queenslander Charm…
This Queenslander home had character in abundance. Traditional VJ lined walls, raked ceilings and detailed mouldings throughout, which set the perfect backdrop for this elegant redesign and quite frankly made our job easy bringing this home back to life! New timber flooring in Woodcut’s ‘Fawn’ added a soft yet warm addition to the already ‘homey’ feel. A decorative archway introducing you to the new open plan living / dining space was the perfect seamless touch.
In addition, feature lighting designed by HAY & Herman Miller added character and ambience. Feature skylights along the raked ceiling not only allows ample natural to flood through the now, open plan living areas but assisted in highlighting the traditional architectural details of the home.
Kitchen: A Hub for Modern Living
The original kitchen was disconnected from the rest of the home, boxed in by walls that hindered both light and movement. Our first step was to embrace an open-plan concept, removing barriers and creating connection between the kitchen, dining, and living areas. By doing so, we enhanced natural light, functionality, and introduced a sense of openness that modern living demands. Refined details such as custom shaker profile doors in Elton Group’s ‘Charcoal Oak’, mixed metal finishes & Visari’s ‘Super White’ porcelain benchtops were the hero materiality of the space.
A spacious island bench became the new centrepiece of the kitchen—doubling as a workspace and social hub. With generous conversation style counter height seating and ample storage means it effortlessly blends functionality with refined aesthetics.
When it came to functionality, storage was key, which meant no space was left unutilised. Clever storage solutions such as a pocket appliance cupboard and a push-to-open concealed corner cupboard with poweer access meant all daily appliances could be stored out of sight, yet still in arms reach. In addition, integrated Miele appliances, accompanied by a Neff Oven Tower & flush set downdraft cooktop add to the elevated experience of the kitchen whether it’s day to day cooking or entertaining with family and friends.

Bathroom: A Relaxing Retreat
Just like the kitchen, the bathroom required a complete transformation to better reflect the homeowner’s lifestyle and needs. Originally a separate bathroom and WC, the space was cramped and outdated, but the bones of the room—high ceilings, VJ walls & natural light meant the space had great potential! Our design aimed to create a tranquil, modern retreat that respected the home’s traditional elements.
As a continuation of the elegant aesthetic, soft neutral tones from the kitchen were carried through into the space. Shaker profile joinery in Dulux ‘Natural White’, ‘Charcoal Oak’ by Elton Group framed mirror cabinet, Corian solid surface benchtop with seamlessly integrated basin & fluted glass shower screen were some of the key elements of the space. ‘Stone Pearl’ tiles by Ace on the floor and skirting layered by Classic Ceramic’s ‘Felix’ on the walls adds to the elevated elegant space. For tapware, Brodware’s Manhattan Range in Aged Iron Bronze re-introduces a touch of tradition to the now modernised bathroom.
Generous in height, we wanted to ensure the bathroom remained spacious and open. A pared-back approach ensured a refined and cohesive aesthetic, with every detail thoughtfully considered. One of our favourite features is the recessed shadow line exhaust by Expella, seamlessly concealed behind the ceiling cornice, preserving the integrity of the space while ensuring modern functionality.
To complete the space, recessed LED lighting is integrated into the ceiling cornice, tiled niche and below the vanity. Workstead Lighting’s Signal Wall Sconce in Bronze adds the perfect ambient touch to the vanity space.
