Designing a home is essentially bringing a bunch of small (and large) elements together in order to create a beautiful cohesive space. With so many decisions to be made, it’s a huge (somewhat time consuming) process if you take on the hefty task of making every single selection within your home. Equally hard, is working out what areas to prioritise, where to spend that bit extra and perhaps where to pull back!
Truth is, the answer is not black and white, as not everyone’s values align. In fact our team design and build every single day and even they all have varying opinions when it comes to things that you should not skimp on…
Let’s see what each of them have to say!!!
“I definitely think that flooring is something which makes a big impact on the feel of a home. Whether its timber, tile or carpet – good quality products are unbeatable!! Nothing cheapens the impact of a room like a cheap dodgy carpet!” – Kirsty
“Anyone that knows me, knows I really don’t like to skimp on anything as I am a stickler for quality – but if there is one thing I see people skimp on far too often, it’s lighting. Often when building or renovating lighting is one of the first things that gets cut in order to reduce the budget, but it’s the one element that can make the biggest impact. Lighting plays a vital role in the way we experience a space and the elements within it. It allows us to see and appreciate beauty whilst also playing and important functional role.” – Darren
“I think mine would have to be window coverings, especially in public spaces of the home where some people may think they don’t ‘need’ privacy. They add texture and softness to a space and help diffuse natural light in the most beautiful way. Also stone! Natural stone, like marble and limestone, should always make an appearance in a home and I will never ever say otherwise!” – Kari
“Good quality (big ticket) furniture items is a must for me. Pieces that stand the test of time, that I can have recovered or freshened up and they can be pass down to my kids and hopefully their grandkids. I would rather go without than waste my money on mass produced pieces that just contribute to land fill down the track.” – Elissa
“Lighting is a big one for me! Not only does it look beautiful, but it plays a huge role in our mood and productivity in every day life. Fusing with natural light during the day and transforming your home at night, the right selection of lighting will seriously make all the difference in your home!” – Claudia
“Definitely painting… you pay for what you get essentially and no mistakes can get covered up…” – Alex
“Storage! You can never have too much storage. That is an area that people seem to always skimp on not thinking they’ll need it but you’ll always end up needing the extra space” – Cam
” I have to second Alex on painting, I think that’s so important and you notice it all the time. Plus paint can really transform a space when it’s done right” – Sarah
