Whether you are a minimalist or maximalist, when it comes to your home’s interior, there is no denying that accessorising with cushions will bring both a comfort factor to your sofa as well as life to your room. It also goes without saying that cushions are one of the best ways to change up a space and create impact without breaking the bank!
But with so many cushions to choose from, how do you go about choosing the right combination for your space? Whilst there are certainly no rules as such, there are some basic guidelines that you can follow when choosing a killer combo for your sofa!
Colour & Pattern
First things first… consider your colour palette!
You want to ensure you select a palette that compliments the rest of your home and also ensures your space feels cohesive and balanced.
Start by seeking inspiration from other key elements within the space such as rugs, artwork, or key pieces of furniture. Drawer on a colour or better yet a shade of that colour as there is nothing worse than a space that is too matchy matchy!
When it comes to introducing pattern, contrast is a good thing so don’t be afraid to mix things up! Just be sure you balance your pattern out with more solid colour to tie back with the rest of your styling. We are huge fans of mixing patterns, whether that be stripes, geometric mixing in some organic patterns!
TIP: Be sure to design to the style of your home (not what’s on trend)… this will give you a timeless aesthetic that will last for years down the track!
Size
Like all elements of design, scale is super important! Playing with scale allows you to create depth and visual interest that compliments the eye. Be sure you play around with different sizes of cushions to give your sofa and overall living room that sense of visual hierarchy. Don’t forget to consider the size of your actual sofa too…. this will dictate a lot about both the sizing and quantity of cushions that you will require.
Typically we like to start with a larger base cushion for your sofa and then work our way forward, layering in varying sizes and then adding a smaller cushion in front. Play around with 2-3 sizes depending on your sofa and organising them from back to front to ensure a tidy cohesive look!
Shape
There are so many options when it comes to shapes… and whilst the style of your interior can often dictate the shape of your cushion, we love a beautifully styled sofa that has a combination of different shapes and sizes. Again, when it comes to timeless design you’ve got to think about what shapes work for your aesthetic.
Shape plays a huge role in creating balance in your aesthetic. Whether that be bolster, lumbar, european, round… just to name a few. It’s about understanding the design direction and working to compliment this style to give impact!
Texture
When styling up your sofa, playing with texture is key!
There are so many different materials to choose from, so have some fun layering different materials such as leather, velvet and linen (just to name a few)…. And no need to stop there, focus in on the little details (they really make all the difference!!) by considering tassels, fringing, flanges etc for that extra touch!
Ratio
At this point you’ve got materials, texture, shape and size down pact… so last but certainly not least… consider ratio!
Good design doesn’t necessarily mean everything has to match or be symmetrical for that matter! Having equal amounts of cushions on either side of your sofa will always look a bit too put together. You want your home to feel comfortable and welcoming and appear ‘lived in’. Playing around with ratio will certainly allow your living room to emit a more relaxed and welcoming feeling which we all try to achieve.
