We are incredibly excited to have been chosen as a finalist for the Interior Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) Residential Decoration Award!! With so many stunning finalists selected across the many categories, we feel honored to have our Tennyson Residence in for the winnings. So as we have our fingers crossed while the award gala takes place in Melbourne tonight, we thought we would take a look back at this much loved project – All of our favorite parts and the purpose behind it all.
This beautifully styled home was a fun, innovative project which allowed us to introduce colour, comfort and textural qualities into the client’s existing living spaces. It was a playful project which embraced the client’s love for florals and greenery in a sophisticated and elegant way. Design excellence was achieved in this home through a combination of spatial planning and the introduction of colour and personality.
Our clients had recently built this riverside home but felt that the new build lacked colour, character and while functional as a whole, the design did not reflect the personalities of the family living within the home. They brought us on board to make their new house feel like a home and inject much needed colour and personality into the space. The clients also wanted new art selections and for these selections to work with the new furnishings. While leaving the creative direction to us, the client expressed a strong preference for floral motifs throughout while maintaining a contemporary edge.
Part of the challenge of this home was its size; the home consisted of 6 bedrooms, 2 dining rooms, 4 lounging spaces, two sitting areas as well as multiple bathrooms and large outdoor areas. The size of the home along with the very neutral palette made the home feel cold, vast and impersonal. We tackled this issue by zoning spaces with furniture and creating mixes of formal, casual and intimate spaces. The formal spaces at the entry of the home were given a lighter and brighter feel and became more casual as you progressed through the home. The upstairs master bedroom and parent retreat were given a moodier colour palette to reflect a more evening space and a feeling of escape from the main areas of the home.
This dining set from Hub Furniture is perfect for such a sleek and seamless interior, with the warmth of the timber creating a moody more sophisticated feel throughout the dining space. Incorporating this with simplistic decor, we were able to create a dining space for our clients to enjoy and entertain! Floor lamps and pendants are a perfect way to introduce artificial lighting into a space, as they can vary in style, material and colouring suitable for the surrounding furnishings. We have included both throughout this Tennyson home.
The architecturally designed home had a very safe colour palette so large artworks and colourful accent pieces were selected to instill vibrancy and colour into the rooms, bringing them to life. To balance this colour, predominantly simple modern European designed furniture was selected. We celebrated the homes natural light and introduced indoor greenery to further enhance the homes connection to the outdoor spaces.
Developing differing but complimentary schemes was key to the design success. We took the client’s love of floral and weaved it throughout the home through soft furnishings, rugs and artwork to create an impactful and personality filled home for the clients to enjoy.
