Outdoor spaces are such a critical part of the home, and although they may not actually be inside the home they impact on the internal a lot more then most realise. Often the outdoor spaces tend to become an after thought, when in fact they deserve just as much love as the interiors – especially when we are blessed with such beautiful Australian weather to enjoy all year round!
Views from inside any home look out onto the spaces surrounding, allowing the outdoor area to potentially become a work of art framed through the windows or doors looking out. So out with the cluttered deck areas, plastic furniture items and neglected patio spaces and in with inviting social retreats, outdoor cooking spaces and luxurious garden hide aways to relax. So we have put together our top tips to consider when designing your new (or possibly overlooked) outdoor area!
1. Create balance with the natural environment –
Drawing inspiration and ques from the environmental surrounds can be one of the best places to start with any outdoor refresh. Considering both the colours and materials from the natural elements like the trees, plant life or views beyond can make for a lovely palette to sit effortlessly within the landscape. Bringing in timbers, stone and natural fibers through the furniture and surface is a sure way to craft a seamless look.
2. Layer outdoor soft furnishings –
Adding varying textures and colours through soft furnishings such as outdoor seat covers, cushions and rugs is something we do every time. It aids in softening the feel of the space and creates an inviting atmosphere which begs you to stay a while longer. Feature cushions, playful patterns and bold statement pieces also add to the vibrant qualities of Australian outdoor living.
3. Consider the flow between the internal and external –
Creating a space which effortlessly flows from inside to outside is one of the most valuable elements of designing a successful outdoor living space. Ensuring the threshold connects between these two areas can be executed in a number of ways, such as floor or ceiling applications, generous doorways and considered open furniture layouts.
4. Offer a variety of seating types –
Utilizing a range of different seating solutions can not only be a great way to break up a space, but also create opportunities for social gathering hubs. An outdoor dinning set and lounge area are always a must for us, but we love adding a bar height bench and stools whenever we can for a relaxed weekend beverage spot!
5. Use hard wearing quality materials –
Quality materials are always at the core of all of our work, and this definitely doesn’t stop within the exterior spaces. Hard wearing weather proof materials and surfaces should be a priority throughout all fixtures, fittings, furniture and styling items in any outdoor environment. This ensures the beautiful pieces you select will do well against the natural elements and maintain their fresh colour and feel. Materials such as high grade outdoor fabrics, robust powder coated steels and finished timbers can make for some perfect external selections.
6. Separate the space into functional social hubs and private retreat areas –
Making sure you create spaces for collaboration are always essential, but private areas for rest and relaxation keep becoming more and more important. By dividing your outdoor space up and allowing for these retreat like areas, an inviting atmosphere which embodies a sense of rejuvenation and privacy can be created. We love pairing a nice sun lounge or outdoor armchair with soft furnishings and a feature side table, just begging to be enjoyed with a book and afternoon beverage in hand!
