What’s that age old saying “Good judgement comes from experience!”

A picture is worth a thousand words, so make sure you take a look at the company’s portfolio. This one is simple, you will know straight away if they are the company for you. Ask yourself a few quick questions: Do you like their design aesthetic? Do they have a style that matches yours? Would you be proud to have your home in their portfolio? Look for quality in both design and construction. If you’re happy with what you’re seeing, you may have found your match.

Pictures and profiles can tell you one story, but one of the best ways to get a sense of a company’s strengths and weaknesses is to read the reviews from past customers and clients. Don’t only look for reviews on the company’s website, but also check out some third party sites like Google and Yelp. Take the good, and the bad! Everyone knows that no one is perfect so if a company has a lot of (real) reviews, both positive and negative, that’s a good sign.

Communication is Key.

If you watch the news or scroll through social media, you know that the construction industry has lots of unknowns at the moment. What is key throughout the entire process of your renovation is a company that not only communicates, but communicates well! You want someone working for you who is going to keep you in the loop through the ups, and sometimes downs, that are inevitable throughout the process. Communication is key in any relationship and your design / construction company is no exception. Look for a company that is responsive, professional and transparent in their communications.

Trust your gut! At the end of the day, you need to feel comfortable with the company you choose. Trust those little butterflies and listen to your instincts. If you get a good vibe from the team, if you like their personalities and sense of humour, and if you feel they genuinely care about your project, you’re on the right track.
