Never underestimate the importance of your relationship between your bed and bedside tables!
There are two important factors to consider when selecting the perfect bed / bedside table combo….
First up, is the other furniture within the space. Whether it’s new furniture or existing, this (along with the size of the room) will dictate what your space needs… most importantly at the top of your list of furnishings is the bed itself. It’s vital to understand form and scale to ensure all the elements are proportionate to one another so you create balance and harmony within your bedroom. There is nothing worse than seeing an awkwardly dwarfed bedside next to a large bed, nor seeing a bedside that resembles something more like a tallboy next to a lower style bed!
Of equal importance is understanding your own personal style and lifestyle needs! Are you an avid accumulator, minimalist, cosy homebody or perhaps you are more of the self-expressive type??
Let’s take a closer look….
Avid Accumulator
I’m not a fan of clutter at all, I’m also not opposed to the term, out of sight, out of mind… If you have an ever growing pile of bedside essentials, a bedside with concealed storage such as drawers or cupboards should be a must have! It means having a tidy space without the sacrifice!
Minimalist
Enjoy living life on the simple side? There are so many people out there that truly thrive off a minimal space, especially in their own bedroom! Pairing it back by using even just a simple stool is a great way to have the practicality of a bedside without consuming too much space.
Be sure you have another space to store your extra things… if they continue to pile up on a small bedside it will completely defeat the purpose of the ‘minimal’ look you’re trying to achieve!
Cosy Homebody
Do you find yourself spending a lot (maybe too much) time in bed? If you’re bedroom is your haven, why not customise your bed and bedsides? Investing in custom pieces gives you the opportunity to truly create the ultimate home hang out!
This dreamy master suite designed by Martha Perez is the perfect bedhead / bedside solution for her brutalist inspired home in Mexico City.
Self – expressive
Your bedside doesn’t need to actually be what some consider to be more of a traditional bedside table! Your bedroom is your personal space and should be about you, so reflect that is any way you can! Sometimes that means thinking outside the box… a tree stump, open shelving to show off your favourite reads or your ever growing stack of magazines that you just aren’t willing to throw away. I’m all for expressing yourself especially in your bedroom, it is so fun seeing all the creative ways people bring out their personality through design.
