Ending another week, and welcoming another weekend. Which for us means more renovation work in the new studio!
This week has been a bit of a big one here in the new space, with a few speed bumps in the progress of our very own reno we are feeling a little bit set back but keep reminding ourselves of how worth it it’ll all be when we can finally sit back and enjoy our beautiful space. So the next two days we will be putting in the man hours to get our construction back on track – and yes renovation delays can get us all no matter how organised or experienced we may be. Definitely just something that can’t be avoided!
So as we begin to see our very own kitchen come to life, we thought we would share a few tips on how you can use materials like timber to inject warmth into your kitchen design. It’s such a beautifully rich material and with the endless variations out there, and taste so unique we thought we would start with a few of our essential go to’s when it comes to planning where and how to use timber in a kitchen renovation.
MATERIAL JUXTAPOSITION
Creating a well considered juxtapostion by adding timber tones with contrasting coloured or textured materials is a great way to give balance to your space. Lighter timbers combined with darker hues, lift the spacial qualities of the space and draw attention to the beautiful features in the design. We love the cupboard internals, range hood surround and feature benchtop of our Gumdale Residence ~ perfect balance of light and dark, and a great injection of that timber warmth.
JUST A TOUCH OF WALNUT
When your can’t decide between marble and timber, why not do both?! The rawness of timber complements the luxury of marble look stone so elegantly, every time. Adding minimal timber can sometimes be all you need to lift the warmth in your kitchen, even if its just a set of joinery fronts or a floating bench to enjoy your morning coffee at – a touch of walnut will never go astray!
FEATURE PANEL CEILINGS
There is just something about a feature ceiling that gets us every time, especially when its timber paneling! Whether it’s a feature you were lucky enough to get when purchasing your home, or something you want to add as part of your kitchen renovation – We vote yes! We were lucky enough to get our Chapel Hill project which already had a stand out racked ceiling, where we reinstated the timber paneling and selected a colour palette for the kitchen below to celebrate it.

TWO TONAL CONTRAST
Combining two different timber looks within one space isn’t impossible either! By selecting varying tones and grains which contrast one another can be a great way to add a unique aesthetic and feel. Try mixing up a warmer veined finish with a deeper tone and texture like we did in our Redland Bay Residence. We love the way these two materials don’t visually fight each other, but contrast just the right amount to give one another place in the space!
FUN OAK TIMBER DETAILS
The light timbers like oak always make for a bright relaxed look. Using oak like finishes in your kitchen can make for a warm open space, and whether is just an set of oak joinery, some open shelving or an all oak kitchen in mixed applications like the one below. Why not have some fun with it too, create a playful feature of your timber and give your kitchen a great talking point!
