“Available space will often determine design parameters, but it’s also important to reflect on how many people will regularly sit at the breakfast bar and its main purpose,” explains Darren James of Darren James Interiors. “Is it a spot to simply have coffee and breakfast in the morning, or are you looking to create an informal dining area where you’ll eat most of your meals? Whether you prefer sitting on stools or chairs can also inform the design.”
Depending on the layout, using an expanse of the island bench could be an option, or for a more regular meal area you may prefer to create a drop down table, off the island with chairs. “Whichever option you chose, always allow 600mm width for each place setting,” says Darren.
“If using both sides of the bench for storage, keep in mind it needs to be sufficiently deep, 1000 to 1200mm works well” adds Darren James.
