As much as we love design from all over the world, there’s something so special about being able to source products designed and manufactured locally! Australian made design will always have an important place in our hearts so it was paramount that we championed this in our own home.
In Bayview One we featured as many Australian design + made products and materials as possible – keeping quality at the core of our selections always. We’ve talked a lot about the local brands we worked with in terms of materiality such as Sussex Tapware, Flooring Xtra and Austaron Surfaces ….but today we want to turn our gaze to the Australian furniture and lighting makers!
JANIE COLLINS
Janie Collins Interiors has been providing unique furniture and lighting to Queensland designers for over 15 years. We love Janie Collins and the way they so proudly support some of Australia and New Zealand’s best manufacturers and artisan furniture designers. We hosted a handful of beautiful ranges from Janie Collins in the new house including Anchor Ceramics, B-TD, Dowel Jones and Fomu to name a few! The quality and handmade nature of the pieces is phenomenal.
Anchor Ceramics practice at working across surface, structure and form, while building bridges between art, design, architecture and craft. Anchor’s collection of refined handmade lighting, hardware and furniture products purposefully show the tactile essence of the clay bodies and glazes developed and utilised in the studio. We selected their ‘Flute Wall Sconce’ through Janie Collins for our entry!
Another wall sconce we specified in various locations around our house was the ‘Perf’ wall sconces by Ben-Tovim Design (B-TD). This brand was founded by Jonathan Ben-Tovim in 2011 and is based in Melbourne. Each B-TD product is assembled by hand, using as many parts and materials from local suppliers as possible. The products are made to order in small batches, allowing customisation and collaboration, and they are another great pick up from Janie Collins Interiors.
Fomu is another Janie Collins represented Melbourne design studio with an aim to design and create objects which embody simplicity while using beautifully considered form and details to enhance the overall functionality of the design. All Fomu products are manufactured in Australia from ethically sourced materials so it just made sense to feature a stunning Fomu piece in Bayview One. We opted for the timeless ‘L’Art De Vivre Lounge Chair’ with timber base and white boucle fabric in our lower living.
“Blurring the boundaries between art and design. We believe that the art of living stems from the idea that if a design is thoughtfully created it’s about making design speak to people rather than just existing for functional purposes”. – a few words from Fomu
JARDAN
Jardan has always revolved around family. As an Australian family-owned furniture business in operation since 1987, the believe that there is no machine that can truly replace the hand or the eye. Every Jardan piece is crafted to order in Melbourne, with care and precision, by hand. Jardan has grown from humble beginnings and has flourished to be one of our favourite local furniture suppliers!
As a design-led business, Jardan believe that good design has a profound impact on our lives. Their collection of sofas, chairs, tables, beds, lighting, textiles, and homewares all speak to the same level of casual elegance that is approachable yet high end. They take inspiration from the relaxed Australian way of life – expressing contemporary ideas through quality materials. We love that they strive to reduce their environmental footprint and make their products sustainable throughout the entire lifecycle by using quality local materials, reducing waste, and making furniture that truly lasts.
We couldn’t go past the ‘Valley Sofa’ for our lower living area as the kids fell in love with it when we visited the Jardan showroom one Saturday. Plus we loved its form and the fact that it didn’t need to be fluffed and fussed over with cushions when hopping on and off the sofa. Some other key furniture items we specified from Jardan were the ‘Huxley’ dining table for the main dining area, and the ‘Arte’ round table for the kitchen settee area – both in a beautiful natural oak timber which we know will last a lifetime.
DESIGN BY THEM
DesignByThem was founded by industrial designers Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis. Based in Australia, the company is run by designers who are dedicated to creating and producing playful products with simplistic forms and great functionality at front of mind. We love that they are completely designed here in Australia and that their aesthetic is suited to minimal timeless spaces.
We popped a couple of their classic ‘Bobby’ chairs in natural solid oak into our kitchen settee and they worked perfectly! The timber and form beautifully matched the Jardan table, creating a fitting location for the kids to complete homework or enjoy a family breakfast beneath the lightwell.
VOLKER HAUG
Volker Haug Studio is a decorative lighting practice based in Melbourne. The studio creates lighting informed by a sense of discovery and experimentation crafted by inhouse designers and makers. With a focus on designs with a sense of playfulness and individuality, the studio has established a long tradition of detailed, elegant lighting. When we first laid eyes on their ‘Wall Discus’ light we knew we wanted to feature it in an upcoming project – so the lucky space was our Bayview One Powder Room! The marble wall mount and brass metal details complement the materiality of the tiles and benchtops in this space wonderfully.
