We’ve been seeing tiles appear in all kinds of applications lately – and we’re loving it! 

Since Milan Design Week and 3DaysofDesign in Copenhagen our mind has been overflowing with design inspiration. We saw so many beautiful materials applied in new and innovative ways, and one we saw A LOT was the unique use of tiles. 

So here’s one worth saving for your next project – all things tile play and where to use them:

BENCHTOPS

First up is benchtop applications! We know for some this would bring back memories of the 70’s and all the tiled benchtops in their dated glory – but it’s making a major comeback. Forget the glazed tiles in autumnal tones that graced the kitchens of the 1970s, when tiles take on a contemporary, mid century or eclectic edge, they can create a tactile delight and unique design detail.

KITCHEN ISLANDS

Next up is the rise in tiled kitchen islands. Sometime the need for texture and visual interest becomes more apparent on a large island bench. Especially when the design calls for the island to be set apart from the rest of the kitchen joinery to ensure it doesn’t get lost visually. In large open-plan kitchens, a tiled island really does helps the kitchen island transform into a focal point. We love the character it can create, plus it’s super practical from a functionality point of view as it’s hardwearing and water resistant!

ROUND FORMS

Another design concept which we think is here to stay is all the wonderful rounded forms and shapes coming through in individual ways. Whether it’s a rounded rangehood, curved shower bay or organic wall form – small format / mosaic tiles can be a great option! Again, this not only suits spaces where waterproofing and tough wear is a criteria but it also adds a wonderful design flair.

FIREPLACE / BENCH CLADDING

Another tile application we are loving to see is when it’s being applied in living space applications like living or dining rooms. Tiles can be a great option for fireplace plinths or surrounds in your living room as most are suitable to the fire retardant qualities required. They also tick all the boxes when it comes to bench seating – structurally supportive, easy to clean and weatherproof for outdoor applications. Plus there is such a large range of tile styles, textures and patterns so the design options are limitless!
