Now it goes without saying we have designed many, many bathrooms in our time and have seen it all when it comes to tapware! We have lots of experience from both a design and build perspective – so we know how important it is that the selection doesn’t just look great but also stands up to the test of time! With so many options available when it comes to tapware, Sussex is often our partner of choice for many of our projects because of their beautiful yet functional, high-quality products.
When we started the early planning stages of our Bayview One build that we wanted quality products that would stand up to the bayside environment, and support Australian makers as much as possible.
One of the first Australian-made brands that stood out as a clear ‘yes’ to specify in our new home was Sussex Taps! Sussex has a proud and rich Australian heritage which runs strong in everything that they do as a business, from the local manufacturing craftsmanship to the timeless designs.
Since their establishment in 1960 by Nicolaas Johannes van Putten, the brand have always remained Australian manufactured which we LOVE! Keeping their founders key vision at front on mind – to create the sturdiest, most solid, and enduring tapware available so that every piece in the collection would be made to last!
“…Because to us we make more than tapware .We create timeless objects of beauty that carry the Sussex spirit out into world.”
But why Sussex Tapware?
ENVIRONMENTALLY CONCIOUS
As Sussex Tapware are an entirely Australian run business they strongly believe in investing in a better Australia! They are actually Australia’s first carbon neutral tapware company, and are now proudly an official member of the Climate Active Network (one of the strictest carbon neutral certification bodies in the world!!)
We love that they have built their main vision and values around sustainability, in all aspects – especially their manufacturing process. Their foundry is a key component in their commitment to both long term sustainability and manufacturing excellence. From the reused scraps to the ability to ensure the highest levels of purity, Sussex’s process is a totally closed loop system in the hands of their specialised foundrymen. With this rigorous process, they’ve been able to recycle the brass and create ethical, high-quality products.
“…We protect what we love. This commitment is combined with our company’s beliefs and our determination to produce Australian-made products. They inspire our ethical responsibilities as a business on how we impact Australia, and the world, for generations to come. So, when you choose beautifully functional Sussex tapware, you’re not just buying for today, you’re investing in a better tomorrow for Australia.”
AUSTRALIAN MADE
Never has there been a more important time in the world to support local – we’ve all heard this a lot throughout the last few years but it is something we all need to make a priority! So the case was no different for our Bayview One home – we knew we wanted to champion Australian designed and made products as much as possible because it is so important to us!
The Sussex story is a 35-year family owned journey in building an Australian business with sustainability at its heart. We adore that every product is created in-house – beginning with the vision of a collection to the casting in the foundry, all the way to the craftsman’s workbench. They make beautifully functional products, manufactured entirely in Australia!
Their products are handcrafted by people, instead of automatic machines. The journey is completed using their LUXPVD® world-class finishing technology. Sussex really do take craftsmanship one step further, by infusing traditional techniques to make stunning Australian- made products.
TIMELESS DESIGNS
Another key factor in our love for Sussex Tapware is the timeless designs across all their collections! Timeless meaning its made to last, made beautifully, and made to perfection. This is a brand moral which aligns with our values as designers as well, so we knew working together on this home would be the perfect match!
This is why we opted for their ‘Circa’ range throughout all our interior spaces – the matte white finish in our kitchen & powder room, and their classic brushed nickel throughout our primary suite and main bathroom. Of course we couldn’t go past the ‘Monsoon’ range for our outdoor shower too as the 316 marine grade stainless steel will stand up to the bayside conditions perfectly!
“…Our designers are always mindful of current tastes, but with one eye turned towards the future, they remain true to Sussex’s heritage. This alchemy of the past, present, and future uniquely distinguishes the design of a Sussex tap.”
Their designers play a crucial role in harmonising form and function in their products for use both bathrooms and kitchens. It is important to them that each product is beautiful, made to last, and environmentally friendly – while always studying how it will feel in your hands.
