Welcome to the first of our wallpaper series, we are kicking it off with our essential do’s and don’ts guide to selecting the right wallpaper!
We love the art of wallpaper and the magic it can bring into a space, but we do know how intimidating the process can be… (throwback to the 70’s of clashing patterns and colours… eeek!)
But don’t worry, wallpaper has evolved along with interior design and we are super impressed with the amount of colourways, textures, and patterns available! You are sure to find something perfectly suited for you and your home.
Although there are no strict rules with wallpaper, there is a slight art to incorporating it successfully into a space. And speaking from experience, in order to make the most of your space here is our must-read essential guide for selecting your wallpaper.
DO’S
Consider your Overall Scheme
Now, before you start hunting for the right wallpaper, you must consider what your existing space already has; your furniture, lighting fixtures, styling items, etc. What does your space need? You can use wallpaper to simply tie in all your furnishings, or make an impact! And the furnishings can follow…
Think about Scale
Wallpaper has had its bad rap, but gone are the days of small scaled stock standard floral prints. We are no longer confined to scale due to sheet sizes and out-dated production methods. This really opens up the opportunity to make a striking impact with a unique design and intricate detail.
Invite Texture
This may come down to materiality, these days wallpaper companies often offer more than just paper which can be just what you need for your space. Try a silk or grasscloth backing, or embroidery is another feature within wallpaper that adds a sense of intrigue into your space!
Don’t be afraid to commit!
There is a common misconception that filling a room with wallpaper is too much… but we disagree. You’ve got to commit! It’s better to wrap a whole room and zone that space than having a singled out wall with abrupt corners. The consistency and flow of material and/or pattern makes the room and design appear more intentional.
DON’TS
Focus on trends
A trendy wallpaper that looks great in someone else home doesn’t always mean it’ll suit yours too! Instead, do your research and choose a style that is specific to your individual space. A bespoke wallpaper will thrive in your home so much more then a trend that will fade out in a couple years.
Imitate Materials
Have you ever walked up to a timber feature wall and realise its wallpaper? With such a wide variety of colours, materials and patterns you should feel no need to opt for an imitated materials such as brick or timber. Those materials speak on their own and being replicated onto wallpaper really just doesn’t give it justice.
Create a feature wall
If you’re wanting a feature, make it a feature space! Like I said, you want your design decisions to be intentional and not look like a hesitant last minute addition. Instead of covering one wall, cover them all! What about the ceiling too? We wont stop you!
Do It Yourself
Much like the art on the wallpaper itself, there is an art to installing it correctly too, and it’s not a job for everybody! Once you spot one flaw, it will haunt you for the rest of your life! So just like us, we recommend leaving it to the professionals so the wallpaper stand out for the right reasons!
