Happy start to another week! Hoping everyone had a lovely Mother’s Day spending time with those most dear and enjoying the sunny weather that we were blessed with over the weekend here in Brisbane.
Today we are bringing you our do’s and our don’ts when it comes to all things wall treatments!
Wall treatments seem to be something people hesitate to go bold on or leave as a final design choice. Feature walls have put a bad reputation out there for spicing up your walls, however with the correct knowledge wall treatments can be the cherry on top when comes to completing a beautifully unique space.
THE DO’S
ADD MOLDINGS
Paint and wallpaper aren’t the only options when it comes to adding a feature to your walls. Mill work and moldings are one of our current favourites! A simple feature that gives any home that traditional edge. Moldings are a great way to add detail and break up large walls, finishing them in a colour match to the wall paint for a seamless look.
WALL CLADDING / PANELING
Paneling is a very tidy and symmetrical feature that can work in almost any space. When choosing to apply some cladding or paneling, people typically go with less is more. Sometimes that is the case and a single feature wall is all you need, but in some cases expanding it beyond just the one wall can create cohesion within the overall home. Being able to wrap two or more walls or even the ceiling can zone a particular area of a space and make it appear more inclusive and considered.
ADD TEXTURE
You can’t go wrong adding texture to your walls. Utilising textured materials such as timber, metals, or even stone can not only add a visual feature but create depth through a textural change in the space. Textures can be injected through the finishes selected and bring with them warmth, depth, personality and tactile characteristics.
WALLPAPER
An age old classic, that actually never seems to age…. wallpaper! I feel like you can never go wrong opting for a wallpaper, but making the right selection for your space is crucial. Sometimes a room screams for something simple and textural to sit perfectly behind bold artworks, or alternatively sometimes the wallpaper can become the art piece through detailed patterns or mural like imagery. You really can let your imagination run wild when it comes to wallpaper, and who says you have to stop yourself at just walls? We used a stunning Kelly Wearstler wallpaper on the ceiling in our recent Ascot Residence, and this unique application absolutely makes the space!!
THE DON’TS
A TREND HEAVY LOOK
There are many ever-changing trends when it comes to wall treatments so it can be easy to get caught up in what is currently on ‘trend’. It is important to consider what suits your space, ensuring your selection is timeless and not needing to be changed with every ‘trend’. Another mistake which is often made is trying to combine too many trends in your home, therefore picking an overall theme or style will ensure your rooms are cohesive with one another. Not to say that your can’t combine varying types of application though… you can definitely combine moldings with wallpaper or wall cladding with paint finishes! It’s all about creating a balanced combination.
NOT CONSIDERING LIGHTING
Some colours and textures will reflect lighting which in some cases can create a beautiful luster while in other cases is can become stark, over exposed and unpleasant to the eye. So considering what kind of lighting will be hitting that surface and whether your want a finish that either reflects or absorbs the light can be critical. Testing samples of your finish in situ across the hours of the day is always a great idea!
COLOUR CONFUSION
There is something grand about going for something bold that sets your space apart, but it all needs to make sense. The colour palette should be considered with the overall design and also its surroundings, allowing for the wall treatments to stand out but tying in shades and tints from the same palette will help make sense of the space and tell a story.
GET A PROFESSIONAL
Our last but definitely not least tip when it comes to treatments is…. to get a professional! As great at some home reno projects can be, there really is nothing that beats the quality and finish achieved by someone who does it as a profession! Wallpaper in particular can go from looking like a 100 bucks to a dogs breakfast quicker then you can image with not enough or too much glue, a slip of a sheet or a pattern match gone wrong.
